OREGON DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION 104 KW DeMONSTRATION PROJECT

In December, 2008 the Oregon Department of Energy in partnership with Solar Way (a consortium comprised of Advanced Energy Systems, PGE, US Bank, Aadland Evans, Moyano Group, Good Company, Energy Trust of Oregon, Oregon Department of Energy, SolarWorld, PV Powered, and United Fund Advisors), activated a 104 KW Solar Electric System on the I-5 205 intersection near Portland, Oregon. The system is unique in that it is the first solar highway installation nationwide. The system is a showcase for Oregon's emerging green technology sector because the manufacturer of both the solar modules and inverter, engineers, and contractors are all located in Oregon. This system is a pilot project to pave the way for larger Solar Way installations.

The system utilizes (594) high efficiency SolarWorld 175 watt modules. The power from the modules is routed through (1) PV Powered 100 kW Inverter before connecting to the grid. The PV System has substantial environmental impacts. The solar system is expected to offset 111,100 kWh in the first year of operations. Over its lifetime the system is expected to save/offset an equivalent amount of energy as 2,900 tons of CO2, 301,300 gallons of gasoline, or 8,700 trees.
